Cameroonian and West African cuisine reinterpreted
Spread the love of cooking

There are those days when we women would love nothing more than to curl up under a blanket – stomach cramps, fatigue, mood swings. For a long time, I searched for natural ways to gently support my body during these times. Besides hot water bottles and herbal teas, one plant in particular has become very dear to me: vetiver khamaré or gongoli in West Africa .

How I discovered Khamaré (Vetiver/Gongoli)

Until a few years ago, I had never heard of Khamaré. I only came across it through social media – at a time when I was desperately searching for natural remedies for my feminine well-being . Since I can't take hormonal medications for my premenopausal symptoms for health reasons, I was curious whether traditional medicinal plants could help me.

For a long time, I searched in vain for vetiver roots in Germany . It wasn't until a visit to Cameroon that I finally found some. At the market, I asked a vendor about them, and she enthusiastically told me about the many benefits of this plant. At that moment, I knew: I had to try it.

✨ For me personally, this drink the most beautiful way to integrate Khamaré into my everyday life. It's uncomplicated, soothing, and accompanies me everywhere – whether ice-cold from a chilled bottle in summer or as a calming, warm infusion in winter.

My personal ritual with Khamaré

Especially in summer, Khamaré water my constant companion. In the evening, before going to sleep, I prepare a carafe of fresh water with a few bundles of roots and some lime slices. I let the water steep in the refrigerator overnight. The next morning, I pour it into my cooler bottle – that way, I have a healthy, refreshing drink , providing me with energy and a feeling of lightness. And the best part: a bundle of Khamaré can be reused up to five times before it needs to be replaced. This makes it not only practical but also sustainable .

In winter, I love the tea version: pour hot water over the Khamaré, let it steep for 10-12 minutes, and then enjoy it hot or lukewarm. It warms me, relaxes me, and gives me little moments of comfort.

Conclusion: Why I love Khamaré (Vetiver/Gongoli)

For me, Khamaré is not just a plant, but a piece of natural women's medicine. It's a piece of tradition combined with modern needs. It brings peace, balance, and a sense that Mother Nature knows exactly what we women sometimes need.
