Cameroonian and West African cuisine reinterpreted

Today, however, we're talking about gari as "le sauveur ," which translates roughly as "the savior ." Anyone who grew up in Cameroon or at least has close contact with Cameroonians will most likely have heard this term before. The name "le sauveur" comes from the fact that gari can be a lifesaver if there's no more food at home or if, for example, you're broke. Since it's very inexpensive, people always keep a certain amount of gari at home, along with sugar, because it fills you up quickly and then gives your stomach a break for a few hours. This savior is therefore extremely popular, especially among students. Every student who respects themselves (laughs!) should always have a ration of gari and sugar as a reserve at home. Or at least set aside a little extra cash for it in case of emergency.

Gari le Sauveur

For classic sauveur, you only need gari (spice), sugar, and water. For a slightly more luxurious version, roasted peanuts or coconuts are added. For an even more indulgent treat, sweetened condensed milk is stirred in at the end

Whether in its classic form or a more luxurious version, I'm always amazed at how delicious this dish tastes when you're really hungry. Try it for yourself!



Gari | le sauveur

Prep time 5 minutes
Servings 1

Ingredients

  • approx. 50 g Gari
  • approx. 200 ml of cold/chilled water
  • 5-6 sugar cubes
  • 1-2 tablespoons of concentrated milk (optional)

Instructions 

  • Place the gari in a small bowl, cover with water, shake off the first excess water, and then cover lightly with water again
  • Add sugar and peanuts, mix well and let sit for about 2-4 minutes
    Optionally, add concentrated milk before eating, stir again and enjoy cold

Notes

If you like, you can also add a few ice cubes before eating
