Cameroonian and West African cuisine reinterpreted
Spread the love of cooking

It's time again for one of my favorite recipes, a delicious Cameroonian appetizer, avocado salad , but this time "royale," which, as you know, means "royal" in French. Why royale, you're probably wondering?

We are already familiar with the classic and the "royal" versions of Ndolè, both featuring shrimp or prawns. This gave me the idea to do the same with other dishes: the classic version for everyday meals and the more refined version for special occasions or guests. From Ndolè royal , we moved on to Pèpè soup royal followed by Gombo royal , which is okra sauce enhanced with shrimp.

Today, Salade d'avocats royal is added to this list. And it certainly won't be the last elegant option.

Avocados are a delicious fruit in themselves, provided, of course, you're lucky enough to find ones that aren't watery or even spoiled. Finding good ones in supermarkets is often a matter of luck. They're either far too hard to use immediately or far too soft from being handled and squeezed by the numerous shoppers. If you buy them to ripen, you have to catch them at the perfect moment when they're ripe enough but not yet spoiled. This, too, can be quite a challenge if you're not experienced.

The avocados I used for this recipe were a lucky find during a shopping trip to an African grocery store, where I was actually looking for plantains. Their color and appearance immediately caught my eye. When the saleswoman mentioned they had just arrived fresh from Cameroon, I knew they would be exceptional. So I snapped them up, despite the higher price. It was definitely worth the investment, though, because they were truly a dream of an avocado. Fleshy, green, and intensely flavorful, they were perfect for my Salade d'avocats royale .

So, the most important ingredient is now bought, I've also already got the others, now let's get started with the recipe, which is super quick and easy. You take…
